French Anaesthetist Jailed for Life for Poisoning Patients, 12 Dead

A French anaesthetist, Frédéric Péchier, has been sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of intentionally poisoning 30 patients, 12 of whom died, during surgical procedures over several years.

The court in Besançon, eastern France, ruled that Péchier had deliberately tampered with patients' anaesthesia or medication to induce cardiac arrest, only to later intervene and attempt to "save" them an act prosecutors described as a disturbing quest for heroism. The incidents took place between 2008 and 2017 at two clinics where he worked.

Péchier denied all charges, claiming he was a scapegoat, but the evidence against him included tampered infusion bags, unusual spikes in cardiac incidents during his shifts, and witness testimonies from colleagues. Several of the victims were healthy individuals undergoing routine procedures when they suddenly went into cardiac arrest.

Prosecutors painted a chilling picture of a doctor who played with lives, putting patients in life-threatening danger for recognition. Some patients survived with severe neurological damage, and families of the deceased demanded justice during the emotional trial.

The ruling marks one of the most shocking medical crime cases in French history. The victims' families expressed relief at the sentence, though many said no punishment could fully account for the trauma and loss they endured.
