Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf Set to Formally Join APC on Monday

The Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, is finalized to officially defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday, January 26, 2026. This significant move follows his formal resignation from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) last Friday. According to statements from the Governor’s camp, the decision was prompted by internal party frictions and the strategic necessity to prioritize the long-term interests of the people of Kano State.

The Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, confirmed that this is a massive structural realignment rather than a solo move. Governor Yusuf will be joining the APC alongside a powerful contingent of political allies, including 22 members of the State House of Assembly, eight members of the Federal House of Representatives, and all 44 Local Government Chairmen in the state. This mass defection effectively signals the collapse of the NNPP’s dominance in its primary stronghold.

In the official announcement, Governor Abba described his move to the APC as a "homecoming," recalling his previous membership in the party in 2014, when he won a primary ticket for the Senate before stepping down for his political mentor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. He emphasized that the APC offers a more stable and organized platform, which will provide his administration with the necessary political framework to execute large-scale developmental projects across the state.

A primary driver for this transition is the Governor's desire to forge a more productive relationship with the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Governor Yusuf believes that aligning with the center will accelerate infrastructure development, enhance regional security, and ensure that Kano State receives its fair share of national resources. He noted that a collaborative relationship with the presidency is essential for the economic prosperity of his constituents.

The move has triggered a wave of reactions across Nigeria’s political landscape, with former Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso reportedly describing the defection as a "betrayal." However, political analysts view the shift as a masterstroke ahead of the 2027 general elections. Upon his official reception on Monday, the Governor is expected to launch a modern e-registration drive for new APC members, marking a new era in Kano State politics.
