Former President Barack Obama has broken his silence regarding a controversial AI generated video shared on President Donald Trump’s Truth Social account. 

The video, which sparked widespread bipartisan condemnation, featured a segment where the faces of Barack and Michelle Obama were superimposed onto the bodies of apes. 

In an interview with journalist Brian Tyler Cohen aired on February 14, 2026, Obama described the current political discourse as having devolved into a clown show, expressing deep concern over the erosion of basic decency in American public life.

While Obama pointedly avoided mentioning Donald Trump by name, his remarks were a clear critique of the behavior coming from the current administration. He noted that while such provocative content succeeds in getting attention, it serves primarily as a distraction from serious governance. 

Obama lamented the loss of decorum and propriety, suggesting that those who once felt a duty to respect the dignity of the Office of the President now seem to operate without any sense of shame.

The controversy began earlier this month when the video was posted late at night during a flurry of activity on the President's social media. The White House initially dismissed the backlash, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt labeling the criticism as fake outrage and explaining the clip as a meme referencing The Lion King. 

However, as prominent Republicans joined Democrats in calling the imagery incredibly offensive and racist, the post was eventually deleted. Trump later claimed he had not viewed the entire minute long video before his staff shared it, but he notably refused to issue an apology.

During the interview, Obama emphasized that despite the loud and divisive nature of social media, he believes the majority of the American people find this behavior deeply troubling. He shared that in his travels across the country, he consistently meets citizens who still value "decency, courtesy, and kindness. 

By framing the incident as part of a larger clown show on television and the internet, Obama urged Americans to look past the unprecedented cruelty of modern political stunts and focus on community building and shared values.

This exchange highlights the intensifying friction between the current and former presidents as the 2026 midterm elections approach. Analysts suggest that by speaking out, Obama is attempting to rally voters against what he characterizes as rogue behavior and a departure from American democratic norms.
