Gambia’s Youth Take Center Stage at Landmark COP Simulation in Senegambia
The Gambia On April 19, 2026, the International Model United Nations The Gambia (IMUNG) hosted a high level COP simulation at the Yunus Emre Turkish Cultural Center. Operating under the theme "Youth Led Climate Solutions.
Advancing Renewable Energy and Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions,” the event gathered a diverse group of young leaders to tackle the climate crisis. The simulation served as a powerful reminder that climate change is an intergenerational challenge, positioning the youth not just as observers, but as essential architects of global environmental policy.
Since its inception last year, IMUNG has rapidly evolved into a premier platform for diplomatic training in the region. The organization is dedicated to equipping the next generation with critical skills in policy debate, negotiation, and public speaking, all while upholding the core principles of the United Nations.
By simulating the complex procedures of a COP summit, the initiative empowered participants to transition from passive stakeholders to active partners in the formulation and implementation of climate strategies. The event was graced by distinguished guests, including Mr. Ali Kerim, Coordinator of the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) in The Gambia.
In an insightful keynote address, Mr. Kerim provided valuable perspectives on international cooperation and the importance of sustainable development. His presence underscored the growing synergy between international developmental agencies and youth led diplomatic initiatives in West Africa.
The success of the simulation was bolstered by significant diplomatic support from the Turkish mission. The organizers expressed profound gratitude to H.E. Fahri Türker Oba, the Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to The Gambia, and the Director of the Yunus Emre Turkish Cultural Center for providing the venue.
This collaboration highlights a shared commitment to fostering educational spaces where young people can engage with the moral and technical tests of our time. As the simulation concluded, IMUNG leadership extended their appreciation to the delegates and observers whose rigorous research and spirited debates defined the day’s success.
The event closed with a forwardooking call to action, cementing IMUNG’s role as a leader in training youth for the rigors of international diplomacy. With the momentum from this successful COP simulation, the organization is already preparing for future events aimed at bridging the gap between youth activism and official policy.
